The final stop of the 2012 Hydro-Turf IJSBA Watercross tour got started Friday afternoon with the Yamaha Corporate Challenge and we did things a little differently this week. We decided to let each competitor run two laps and scored them as individuals. The teams representing Mardi Gras Casino and the City of Charleston readily agreed and we had an all out battle. Jerry Anderson and Jim Gussis were the elder statesmen in the group and set the pace then along came the youngster Josh Starcher and he lowered the mark to 72 seconds. Carlos Pena was unable to better that, but the team Captain for the City of Charleston, Joe Varney, carved up the course at a blistering 67 seconds which was enough to hold off Bobbie Nichols and give Joe the win. After the Yamaha Corporate Challenge we went into a special event we hold every year at the Governors Cup sponsored by the National Guard, DEI Electric and Blackstar-racing.com. It is a hot lap to benefit veterans of the armed services and is really crowd friendly event that gives each competitor a single lap to run their fastest ET. The Ski class competed first with Rockstar Energy Bullet Hulls Rob Flores turning in a 34.59 right on the heels of Rick Roy Products Yamaha rider Josh Block with his 34.30. However two time defending champion in this event ADA Hot Products pilot Rick Sherker took the win from the pole position with a 33.54 second run to continue his reign as the National Guard Hot Lap king.
