London, Monday, 21st May, 2012 Jim Goodchild (Hemel Hempstead) made a stunning debut in the P1 AquaX Championship by winning both the opening rounds in Plymouth over the weekend on his Kawasaki Ultra 300. Making the most of the calm waters, the 48-year old was in imperious form streaking away from pole position to head the 22-strong field into the first mark and then going on to lead every lap of both races. Goodchild gave an early season wake up call to reigning AquaX Champion Russell Marmon (Christchurch) who chased the double race winner in vain. To be honest I did not come to Plymouth expecting to win, so I am really pleased, said Goodchild. Sundays race was really close, Russell kept me honest all the way but I held him off right to the end and I am really pleased with the weekends result. I will be getting some more hours riding on my ski before Hull as I know its going to be a close fight between us all year. Marmon admitted he is relishing the friendly rivalry and the new challenge from Goodchild. Jims a great rider who has won a lot of races, so to be honest I dont mind coming second to him, said Kawasaki Ultra 300 rider Russell. I didnt really prepare enough before this round as I have been concentrating my attentions on winning the 300 mile Iron Man Havasu Race in the USA where I won the Elite 300 class. Another newcomer filled the final podium place in Plymouth , with Tim Batte (Hinckley) finishing third in both races on his Kawasaki Ultra 300 ahead of last years Vice Champion Richard Cable (Bradford), who got his campaign off to a solid start with two fourth places. I got in front of Russell at the start of the second race and felt really good, although he passed me and pulled away I did start to catch him towards the end but ran out of time, said Tim. It was hard work but I felt really competitive and was surprised to beat Richard as he was the only rider to beat Russell last year. I think I can get some more speed out of my ski so hope to be challenging for a win in Hull. Mat Shipley (Seaford) took an early lead in the new 250 Class by winning Saturdays race and finishing second in Sundays encounter to last years Am300 Champion Dave Huddleston (Milton Keynes), who missed Saturdays race completely. Plymouth rider Tim Cope used his knowledge of the Sound water to score second and third place finishes on his ScoprionTrack Yamaha FZR so now lies second in the points standings. Reigning 200 Class champion Duncan Johnstone (Fareham) was in great form, winning his category in both races. Solent Skiers Club riders were 1, 2 and 3 on the podium on Sunday which is a very good showing for the beginning of the season, he said. Its looking like our club is becoming a good breeding ground for the AquaX series, with fellow club member Andy Steele being just 300 metres behind me.
